I love gambling. But I've also seen people destroy their lives with it. Here are my rules for keeping it fun.
The Golden Rule
Never gamble with money you can't afford to lose. Your rent, bills, food money — that's off limits. Always.
Set Limits Before You Start
1. Daily limit: How much you can lose today 2. Weekly limit: Total weekly gambling budget 3. Time limit: Max hours per session 4. Win target: When to walk away with profit
Write these down BEFORE you start playing. When you hit any limit, stop. No exceptions.
Warning Signs
- Gambling to make back losses (chasing) - Borrowing money to gamble - Lying about how much you gamble - Gambling instead of working/studying - Feeling anxious when not gambling - Increasing bets to feel the same excitement
If you recognize any of these in yourself, take a break. Seriously.
Tools Available
Most reputable casinos offer: - Deposit limits — cap how much you can deposit per day/week/month - Loss limits — stop you from losing more than a set amount - Session reminders — pop-ups telling you how long you've been playing - Self-exclusion — temporarily or permanently block your account - Cool-off periods — 24h/48h/7d breaks
USE THEM. They exist for a reason. The platform I use (1win) has all of these, and I have my deposit limit set to prevent impulsive late-night top-ups.
Getting Help
If gambling is becoming a problem: - National Council on Problem Gambling: 1-800-522-4700 - GamCare: www.gamcare.org.uk - Gamblers Anonymous: www.gamblersanonymous.org
There's no shame in asking for help. It takes more courage to admit a problem than to ignore it.
