A parlay (or accumulator) combines multiple bets into one. All selections must win for the bet to pay out. The odds multiply together, creating massive potential payouts.
The Appeal
3 picks at 2.0 odds each: - Single bets: 3 x $10 x 2.0 = $60 return ($30 profit) - Parlay: $10 x 2.0 x 2.0 x 2.0 = $80 return ($70 profit)
Same picks, more than double the profit. That's why parlays are addictive.
The Math Against You
With 3 picks at 50% each: - All 3 winning: 12.5% chance - You'll lose 87.5% of parlays
With 5 picks: 3.125% chance. That means you lose 97 out of 100 parlays.
Smart Parlay Rules
1. Max 3 legs — more than 3 and the math destroys you 2. Only use strong picks — don't add legs just to boost odds 3. Correlated parlays — picks that relate to each other (same game, same team) 4. Small stakes — never more than 1-2% of bankroll per parlay 5. Mix with singles — for every parlay, also place the picks as singles
My Parlay Results
Last 3 months: - 2-leg parlays: 14/38 won (36.8%) — profitable - 3-leg parlays: 6/25 won (24%) — slightly profitable - 4+ leg parlays: 1/15 won (6.7%) — big loss
Lesson: stick to 2-3 legs maximum.
The Fun Parlay
Every weekend I put $5 on a 5-leg parlay as a lottery ticket. If it hits, great. If not, I've only lost $5. My real money goes on singles and 2-leg parlays.
